Ingredients

- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan.
- In a small bowl, combine the chopped dates, boiling water, and baking soda. Set aside and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix in the flour mixture. Stir in the date mixture (including the water) until well combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
