Lok Lak, also known as Shaking Beef, is a popular Cambodian dish featuring stir-fried marinated beef served over a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, often accompanied by a tangy dipping sauce. It’s a simple yet flavorful dish that’s easy to prepare.

For the Beef Marinade:

  • 1 lb beef sirloin, cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced (optional)

For the Salad Base:

  • Lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato, sliced
  • 1 cucumber, sliced

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon crushed garlic (optional)

  1. In a bowl, combine the beef cubes with soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, sugar, minced garlic, and black pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the dipping sauce by mixing lime juice, sugar, salt, black pepper, and crushed garlic in a small bowl. Set aside.
  3. Arrange lettuce leaves on a serving platter and top with sliced tomatoes and cucumbers.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry quickly until browned and just cooked through, about 3-4 minutes. For the last minute of cooking, add the sliced onions and bell peppers.
  5. Place the cooked beef and vegetables over the prepared salad.
  6. Serve the Lok Lak with the prepared dipping sauce on the side.
