Homemade Flour Tortillas are soft, warm, and far superior to store-bought varieties. They are surprisingly simple to make and require just a few basic ingredients. Freshly made tortillas can elevate any taco, burrito, or wrap.

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil or lard
  • 1 cup warm water

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Add the vegetable oil or lard to the flour mixture. Use your fingers to combine the ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a dough begins to form. You may not need all the water, so add it slowly.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Divide the dough into 16 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Let the dough balls rest, covered with a clean kitchen towel, for at least 15 minutes. This resting period helps the gluten relax and makes it easier to roll out the tortillas.
  6. After resting, use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a thin, round tortilla about 8 inches in diameter. Try to get them as thin as possible without tearing.
  7. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place one tortilla in the skillet and cook until bubbles form on the surface, about 1 minute.
  8. Flip the tortilla and cook for an additional minute on the other side, or until it has light brown spots.
  9. Remove the tortilla and wrap it in a clean cloth to keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
  10. Serve the tortillas warm.
