Homemade Flour Tortillas are soft, warm, and far superior to store-bought varieties. They are surprisingly simple to make and require just a few basic ingredients. Freshly made tortillas can elevate any taco, burrito, or wrap.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil or lard
- 1 cup warm water
Directions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
- Add the vegetable oil or lard to the flour mixture. Use your fingers to combine the ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the warm water, stirring until a dough begins to form. You may not need all the water, so add it slowly.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into 16 equal portions and roll each into a ball. Let the dough balls rest, covered with a clean kitchen towel, for at least 15 minutes. This resting period helps the gluten relax and makes it easier to roll out the tortillas.
- After resting, use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a thin, round tortilla about 8 inches in diameter. Try to get them as thin as possible without tearing.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place one tortilla in the skillet and cook until bubbles form on the surface, about 1 minute.
- Flip the tortilla and cook for an additional minute on the other side, or until it has light brown spots.
- Remove the tortilla and wrap it in a clean cloth to keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
- Serve the tortillas warm.
