Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic until the beef is browned and the onions are soft. Season with salt and pepper. Drain any excess fat and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Set aside.
  4. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Season with a little salt and pepper (and paprika or thyme if using).
  5. Spread half of the cooked ground beef over the potatoes.
  6. Pour half of the soup mixture over the beef and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef, soup mixture, and cheese. Dot the top with the small pieces of butter.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  10. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
